Dev Diary #8 - MOAR CONTENT
Hello!
I hope you're doing well. Please tell me about your week I'd love to hear about it!
The next demo update for Zoomies is close to being finished and I'm super excited to tell you about it, as well as some future plans I have in store. So let's get going:
New Track - Wild West
The next demo update will include yet another new track. This one is the freshest of all as I only started making it very recently, inspired by playing Red Dead Redemption 2!
The 'Wild West' track may be the longest one yet, featuring average lap times ranging from 50 seconds to 1 minute. I've incorporated some unique elements, such as a ramp for jumping over rugged terrain, varying track heights as the cats race through a small valley away from the town, and even a train track with a moving train. You can race alongside the train and then cross the tracks, but be cautious of the train!
I have chosen not to show off the town part of the track as I'm still not happy with it, since it still hugely resembles the demo scene from the asset pack that I have used for the 3D art. I will release a gameplay video of the track closer to the release of the track :)
New Cat - Maine Coon
Introducing the Maine Coon; the newest, fastest cat in the game. The Maine Coon stands tall as also the largest/heaviest cat in the game, which affects their racing ability. Their muscular body enables them to have a lightning fast top speed, but their heavy weight means they take a while to get to such speed. Their turning ability is average, matching that of a Tabby. The Maine Coon will require a masterful player to take control and avoid getting bogged down during slower, more complex areas of the track and take advantage of the high top speed during straightaways.
I'm still not happy with the look of the Maine Coon. I have recently upgraded my PC, which means I've lost the ability to use my 3D modelling software, so as soon as I am able to again, I will give the Maine Coon a bit of a makeover. However I am able to make an immediate change; the colour scheme. Please let me know down in the comments which of the below variants you prefer:
In my opinion, Variant 1 looks too much like a Tabby rather than a Maine Coon.
I like this variant, but am unsure of how to make it look better. Once I have my modelling software, I'll make the face longer and give the cat more pronounced, thicker features. It's also hard to make a low poly cat look furry like the real thing 😭
The Future
Here are some things I am working on for future builds of the game:
itch.io App Support
Some players have noticed that the itch.io app does not support this game and they are forced to download new game updates from the store page. I can only apologise as I have no knowledge of the app as I do not use it myself. But to make it easier for you guys to update Zoomies, I am working on adding support for the app :)
Moar Tracks
I am still working on more new tracks, have a look at some of the (very unfinished) screenshots below. Let me know which track you want to see more of!
As always, I cannot say exactly when the new update will be released. But I will say it will be soon :) please keep following for more updates!
Thank you!
